How to improve team performance?

A team’s performance can pretty much always be improved. To make performance improvements usually takes a change in one or more of the team’s culture, engagement, motivation, dynamic, skills, techniques, membership, leadership, willingness to collaborate, confidence, resources, trust, honesty; and powers of self-analysis.

A team’s natural dynamic isn’t necessarily the most efficient, effective or enjoyable way for its members to work together. Intervention is often needed to increase its performance.

Every team’s dynamic can be developed and improved, whether that’s a sports team, a business team or a team in the third sector. Positive change will usually bring improvements in performance.

Where do you start?

A team’s dynamic and development should always focus on what’s needed to complete its mission. It should fit its vision, purpose, goals/missions and values. Have you defined them clearly enough? Is the team sufficiently well aligned around them?

Every team member has a vested interest in its success. But if the team’s dynamic is unsupportive, restrictive or misaligned, it will have an adverse impact of performance. It can also have a demotivating effect. Finding out how every stakeholder likes to work is a good step in agreeing a common way of working collaboratively. Have you involved them in working out how best to work together?

Who’s in your team is hugely important. You need to recruit the best, train the best and retain the best people you can. That means you need very strong recruitment, training and retention processes. Have you got all those in place?

Everyone has to win

Is there enough skin in the game for every stakeholder? Is there a reward available for everyone if and when success arrives? When the team wins, does everyone in it win? This is a necessity if the team is going to reach full power.
